The GY MPU 9250/6500 6-Axis Accelerometer Gyroscope Sensor Module – Without Magnetometer is a compact motion-sensing module designed for robotics, balancing systems, motion tracking, vibration monitoring, and embedded electronics applications. The module provides 6-axis motion sensing through a 3-axis accelerometer and 3-axis gyroscope.

Although the PCB or sensor package may carry MPU-9250/6500 markings, this supplied version does not provide usable magnetometer functionality. Therefore, the module should be considered and used as a 6-axis IMU rather than a 9-axis MPU-9250 sensor.

The accelerometer measures linear acceleration along the X, Y, and Z axes, while the gyroscope measures angular velocity around all three axes. By combining these measurements in software, the module can be used for tilt estimation, orientation tracking, motion detection, stabilization, and balancing applications.

Communication with a microcontroller is primarily through the I²C interface. The default I²C address is typically 0x68. The address can be changed to 0x69 by setting the AD0 pin HIGH, which can be useful when connecting multiple compatible devices to the same I²C bus.

The sensor also provides an internal temperature sensor. The breakout board includes supporting components required for convenient interfacing with commonly used microcontroller development platforms.

Important Note

This module does NOT provide magnetometer functionality.

Although the PCB or IC may be marked MPU-9250/6500, the supplied module operates as a 6-axis IMU consisting of a 3-axis accelerometer and a 3-axis gyroscope.

It should not be purchased for applications requiring a 3-axis magnetometer, compass heading, or full 9-axis motion sensing.

For applications requiring absolute compass heading or magnetic-field measurement, an external magnetometer or a verified 9-axis IMU should be used.

Disclaimer

  • This product is sold specifically as a 6-axis accelerometer + gyroscope module without magnetometer functionality.
  • PCB and IC markings may contain references to MPU-9250 and/or MPU-6500. Such markings should not be interpreted as confirmation of 9-axis functionality.
  • Magnetometer/compass functionality is not guaranteed and should be considered unavailable.
  • Product PCB color, component placement, markings, and minor hardware details may vary depending on the manufacturing batch.
  • Images are for reference purposes. The actual supplied product may have minor visual differences.
  • Always verify supply voltage, pin configuration, and logic levels before connecting the module.
  • Incorrect wiring, reverse polarity, excessive voltage, or short circuits may permanently damage the module.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Is this a 9-axis MPU-9250 sensor?

No. The supplied version should be treated as a 6-axis IMU providing a 3-axis accelerometer and 3-axis gyroscope.

2. Does this module have a magnetometer?

No usable magnetometer functionality is provided. Do not use this module for applications requiring compass or magnetic heading measurements.

3. Why is the module marked MPU-9250/6500?

Some commercially available boards use common PCB designs or markings for multiple IMU variants. The actual functionality of this supplied version is limited to accelerometer and gyroscope sensing.

4. What sensors are available on this module?

It provides a 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis gyroscope, and internal temperature sensor.

5. What is the default I²C address?

The default I²C address is typically 0x68.

6. Can the I²C address be changed?

Yes. Setting the AD0 pin HIGH typically changes the address from 0x68 to 0x69.

7. Can I use this module with Arduino?

Yes. It can be interfaced with Arduino-compatible microcontrollers using I²C and an appropriate MPU-6500/compatible library.

8. Can it be used with ESP32?

Yes. The module can be interfaced with an ESP32 through I²C, provided the correct supply and logic-level requirements of the particular module are followed.

9. Can I use it for a self-balancing robot?

Yes. The accelerometer and gyroscope measurements can be combined for tilt estimation and are suitable for balancing and stabilization projects.

10. Can this sensor determine compass direction?

No. Without a functional magnetometer, the module cannot independently provide an absolute magnetic compass heading.

11. Can it measure roll and pitch?

Yes. Accelerometer and gyroscope measurements can be processed using techniques such as a complementary or Kalman filter to estimate roll and pitch.

12. Can it calculate yaw?

The gyroscope can measure rotation around the yaw axis, but absolute yaw/compass heading cannot be reliably maintained without an external heading reference such as a magnetometer. Gyroscope-only yaw estimates accumulate drift over time.
