Dummy Motor (Dead Axle) for Robot Chassis
Product Description
The Dummy Motor (Dead Axle) is a passive mechanical component designed to provide support for unpowered wheels in robotic chassis. It is shaped to fit standard centre shaft motor mounting brackets, allowing a robot to use additional wheels without installing extra drive motors.
This provides a cost-effective way to build stable 4-wheel robotic chassis using only two powered motors while the dummy motors support the remaining wheels.
Structural Wheel Support
The dummy motor acts as a dead axle, providing a stable mounting point for a free-spinning wheel. It helps keep the chassis balanced and level while reducing the overall weight, cost, wiring, and power consumption of the robot.
Passive Design
Unlike an actual motor, this product contains no electrical components or functional motor gears. It is designed only for mechanical wheel support and does not generate torque or provide powered movement.
Standard 6mm Shaft
The integrated 6mm shaft is compatible with many standard robot wheels. It can also be adapted to other shaft sizes using suitable couplings.

Working Principle
The dummy motor is mounted in the same type of bracket used for a compatible centre-shaft motor. A wheel is then attached to its 6mm shaft.
The wheel rotates freely as the robot moves, while the powered motors provide the actual driving force. This arrangement allows a 2-wheel-drive robot to use four supported wheels for improved balance and stability.
Typical Application Scenarios
4-Wheel Robotic Chassis
Use two powered motors for drive and two dummy motors for supporting the additional wheels.
Educational Robots
Useful for line-following, obstacle-avoiding, and school robotics projects where reducing cost and electronics complexity is important.
Trailer Mechanisms
Can be used to support unpowered wheels on robot trailers and other mobile platforms.
DIY Mobile Robots
Suitable for custom robotic chassis where additional wheel support is required without adding powered motors.
Applications
- 2WD 4-wheel robots
- Line follower robots
- Obstacle avoiding robots
