Small Ball Castor Wheel – Omnidirectional Caster Wheel for Robot

The Small Ball Castor Wheel is a compact omnidirectional support wheel designed for small mobile robots, robotic cars, DIY platforms, and educational robotics projects. It allows the robot to move freely in multiple directions while providing stable support to the chassis.

Unlike a conventional wheel that primarily moves forward and backward, the ball castor uses a freely rotating stainless steel ball, allowing smooth movement in different directions. It is commonly used as a neutral or supporting wheel in 2-wheel drive (2WD) robotic platforms, where two powered wheels provide motion and the castor wheel supports the remaining side of the chassis.

The castor features a lightweight plastic body with a  stainless steel ball. Its compact size makes it particularly suitable for small robotic platforms where space and weight are important considerations.

Three mounting holes positioned approximately 120° apart allow the castor to be securely attached to a robot chassis or base plate.

How Does a Ball Castor Wheel Work?

The castor contains a freely rotating ball that acts as the contact point between the robot and the floor. Since the ball can rotate in different directions, it follows the movement generated by the robot’s powered wheels without requiring a separate motor.

For example, in a typical 2WD robot, two DC geared motors are connected to the left and right wheels. The ball castor is mounted at the front or rear of the chassis to provide the third point of support. As the powered wheels move or turn the robot, the castor ball rotates freely according to the direction of movement.
